IT Graduate

October 2006

"After studying Computer Science at University, I joined Mitchells & Butlers' Corporate Graduate Programme as a management trainee within the IT function.

The IT graduate training programme consists of a number of placements (each typically lasting three months) both within and outside of IT. This represents a unique opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the IT function and the interaction between different teams within the department, whilst also recognising the wider role of IT in the organisation.

Since joining the company in 2006, I have completed placements in IT Development (working on the Horizon project - converting the newly-acquired Whitbread outlets to Mitchells & Butlers' IT systems) and IT Service Delivery. I am now due to spend three months outside of the IT department, in the area of Operational Services. The above all followed my initial 4-week pub placement, in which I studied for the Certificate in Retail Management Competence (CRMC) and National Certificate for Personal License Holders (NCPLH) courses whilst working at the Woodmans Rest, an Ember Inn in Solihull.

IT, by nature, is a constantly changing environment, with new and exciting challenges emerging as technologies continue to advance. As a new graduate, your placements in IT are likely to be structured around the major projects being undertaken at the time in order to give you as great an opportunity as possible to learn about the department and its role within Mitchells & Butlers. There is also scope for you to decide which placements to undertake, based on your own development needs and aspirations.

During your two years on the IT graduate scheme, you will have the chance to experience a number of areas within the department, including Development, Service Delivery, Service Support, Business Analysis, Commercial and IT Architecture. In addition, you will have the opportunity to undertake placements in other functional areas, carefully selected to complement your experiences within IT. Following successful completion of the programme, graduates will typically look to move into a role within one of the above areas."
