Property Graduate
Building Management, 2004 intake
My first ideas about the Building Management Department when seeing it on the Mitchells & Butlers website revolved around designing and refurbishing sites, and whether I would get involved in coming up with new brands! In reality the department does far more than this, and has roles which vary vastly in responsibility. From Area Building Managers who manage maintenance and repairs for up to 200 sites, to Brand Building Managers who manage all refurbishments and building works for an entire brand, to Cost Managers who plan and manage the capital budget for the entire year. My Graduate Programme encompassed most of these roles, and I rapidly learnt how valuable they all are to the department.
Currently I'm working as Assistant Brand Building Manager for Miller and Carter. Despite the name, it's a completely autonomous role. I manage everything property related for the Brand, from minor projects to new builds to conversions of existing sites. I also take part in brand meetings, advising on any property issues which might arise, helping to manage maintenance costs, and holding the brand design.
I have just completed working towards gaining my Chartership in Building, which took about 4 years in total. I have received total support from Mitchells & Butlers for this, with help from within the department and company as a whole. The Department offers Chartership in both Building and Surveying, and both are available to graduates even if they are from a non-related degree background (I'm actually a Psychology Grad!).
