Training & Development

This will be your very first week at Mitchells & Butlers and it will be a week to remember. The key objective is to provide you with an overview of Mitchells & Butlers and our different businesses, together with a clear understanding of how your career can develop within the organisation. It will also provide you with a chance to explore key management skills and to start building your network of contacts within the Company.

You will work with your Line Manager and our Corporate HR Adviser to design your own two-year Mitchells & Butlers training and development programme, covering the following areas:

  • Technical competencies - including financial support to study for relevant professional qualifications, professional courses, and on-the-job training.

  • Business competencies - including the development of commercial and financial expertise, negotiation techniques, customer service, project planning, personal effectiveness, presentation skills, IT skills and creative thinking.

  • Managerial competencies - the development of managerial behaviour identified as critical to success in Mitchells & Butlers.

That's the theory. The practice will be enormously challenging, unpredictable, innovative and something to report to your friends at other companies who have just suffered a conventional chalk and talk induction.

The Jobs

Throughout your two years on the programme you will have real live jobs to do. Depending on your function, you will work in between three and six jobs before reaching your target role. This role is the key job for young Managers in each function. It represents a target that is achievable through excellent performance and one which will allow the individual to establish a track record of delivering results.

These are not theoretical jobs - they are positions of real responsibility that will contribute hugely to the company and to your own career experience. Despite the demands of your training and education, you will be expected to perform to your best in each and every job.

Advice, Help & Knowledge

We think that learning from and sharing ideas with other people inside Mitchells & Butlers is a vital part of your development. Along with encouraging you to develop your own network of contacts and friends within the organisation, we help you in two ways.

Buddying - As soon as you accept a place on the programme you will be ‘buddyed up’ with a graduate already on the programme. Your buddy will be able to give you the inside perspective on life at Mitchells & Butlers. They can help you anticipate the challenges ahead of you and get the most from your two years on the programme.

Mentors - In your first few weeks you will be assigned a mentor. She or he will be a senior manager in Mitchells & Butlers, though not necessarily in the same function. Your Mentor will provide you with valuable senior management insight and experience, and will help you to assess your progress and develop your career.
